Crews began adding another layer this week for the new Mill Street Center in San Rafael. Every bit of rebar brings us a little closer to opening the doors to a modern, efficient shelter and 32 private rooms to provide housing for individuals who have struggled most to maintain stability in our community.

Homeward Bound operated the county’s only year-round emergency shelter for adults at the site on Mill Street since 1986. While we await completion of “Mill Street 2.0,” we have moved our shelter services to a temporary location a few blocks away on Kerner Boulevard.

When finished, the rebuilt center will be four floors with ground-level parking, a shelter for 40+ people and the new rooms for permanent supportive housing on the two top levels. These rooms will offer a type of housing not available currently in Marin, with on-site support for people who have experienced homelessness for prolonged periods.

We’re excited to reach the home stretch of fundraising for this $19 million project. You can help with a gift online or by check to Homeward Bound of Marin, 1385 N. Hamilton Parkway, Novato, CA 94949 (write “Mill Street” in the notes field.)
