Work has begun on the foundation for our new Mill Street Center shelter and housing program at 190 Mill St. in San Rafael. The elevator shaft has been installed along with helical piles to support the building.

When finished, the center dubbed “Mill Street 2.0” will offer shelter for 40+ adults each day and include 32 private rooms for supportive housing to serve people who can benefit most from ongoing support. Homeward Bound has operated Marin County’s only year-round emergency shelter for adults on the site since 1986.

When finished, Mill Street  Center will comprise four stories with parking on the ground floor, the first-floor shelter and housing on two upper floors. The new shelter will offer smaller dormitories for better sleep, with designated spaces for youth and a gender-neutral restroom.

We’ve raised more than $17.6 million of the $19 million needed to open the doors of the new building in early 2022, thanks to help from key foundations, government partners and individual donors.
