Fresh Starts Culinary Academy awarded certificates this month to its first graduates of the year, which marks the 25th anniversary of this free program to prepare trainees for work in the busy food industry.

Our eight graduates joined more than 1,000 who have completed the Fresh Starts Culinary Academy training in core culinary skills. We look forward to seeing them write their own individual recipes for success!

The academy began soon after New Beginnings Center shelter opened its doors in Novato, offering training to interested participants from our programs. In the years since, the program has gained structure and earned approval by the American Culinary Federation.

Our program has grown alongside others across the country who engage in similar training alongside community meal services. Fresh Starts Culinary Academy is a model member of Catalyst Kitchens, which comprises 65 agencies nationwide.

Launched in the 900-square-foot shelter kitchen, the Fresh Starts training now occurs mainly in the fully equipped commercial kitchen adjacent to The Key Room event venue. The program is open to members of the broader community along with people in Homeward Bound shelter or housing programs.

The next 11-week class opens Monday, May 4. Applications are open now online for people seeking new career opportunities!
