Denna's story

Moving from our shelter into a studio unit at our Next Key Apartments was a thrill, Denna Harvey recalls. Ten years later, she’s excited to furnish a new home that she and her husband purchased in Suisun. “I’m still very grateful,” Denna says. “I hoped my situation would get better but never in a million years did I imagine this.” Her graduation from Fresh Starts Culinary Academy started a career path through several kitchens and graduation with a community college degree. She now works as the dietary services manager for a nursing home, overseeing menus for each patient’s needs. “I love serving the elders,” she says. The Fresh Starts program told her “anything is possible,” Denna recalls. She recently filmed a video cooking her grandmother’s recipe for Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey Legs as part of a Video Recipe Book for the Jacques P├ępin Foundation. The foundation supports our culinary training.

“I had so much fun. It’s all part of my journey from Homeward Bound and I’ve never forgotten where my launchpad was.”
