Denna's story

Moving from our shelter into a studio unit at our Next Key Apartments was a thrill, Denna Harvey recalls. Ten years later, she’s excited to furnish a new home that she and her husband purchased in Suisun. “I’m still very grateful,” Denna says. “I hoped my situation would get better but never in a million years did I imagine this.” Her graduation from Fresh Starts Culinary Academy started a career path through several kitchens and graduation with a community college degree. She now works as the dietary services manager for a nursing home, overseeing menus for each patient’s needs. “I love serving the elders,” she says. The Fresh Starts program told her “anything is possible,” Denna recalls. She recently filmed a video cooking her grandmother’s recipe for Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey Legs as part of a Video Recipe Book for the Jacques Pépin Foundation. The foundation supports our culinary training.

“I had so much fun. It’s all part of my journey from Homeward Bound and I’ve never forgotten where my launchpad was.”
