Volunteer
Volunteers make our community stronger.
We offer a range of opportunities with varied commitments of time, energy and skills. We welcome your ideas too.
Volunteer opportunities
Volunteers make it possible for us to carry out our daily work on behalf of the community. We depend on your generous gifts of time and skill in many ways, from making dinner for a homeless shelter to assembling furniture for families moving into new homes.
Our programs depend on your support and we’re deeply grateful to the hundreds of people who volunteer with Homeward Bound every year.
Your support helps people leave homelessness behind
We partner with hundreds of volunteers every year who take action to maintain vital services, including meal providers, helpers in our 26-row produce garden and teams for food pantries, craft fairs or holiday needs.
We look forward to connecting with you about ways to work together to end homelessness.
If you’d like to volunteer with us, please contact Andrea Rey, Community Engagement Coordinator.

Meal servers
Greet diners, fill plates and create a welcoming space for nourishment and connection as a server at our Jonathan’s Place shelter. We are looking for individuals or teams of two that will work with onsite staff to help with meal set-up, light food prep and starting the cleanup. This project offers a hands-on way to support people taking their first steps toward stability and paths to housing.
Location: 190 Mill Street, San Rafael, 94901
Meal providers
Nourish connections for shelter residents by providing an evening meal at Jonathan’s Place. Groups can provide a meal for 50-55 people on one evening or a recurring basis. This is a satisfying opportunity for congregations, service groups or assorted friends, neighbors and colleagues. Your meals can come from a store or be made in an institutional kitchen like your school or church. We have lots more to share and even some tried-and-true recipes if you want them.
Location: 190 Mill Street, San Rafael, 94901
Kids' activities and childcare
If you love to connect with kids through fun activities, we can use your help! Our Oma Village family community has an opportunity for volunteers to provide childcare support while parents attend a monthly meeting. Lead a craft or game in a role that makes you an active partner for families.
Location: Oma Village is located at 5358 Nave Drive, Novato, 94949
Stylist or barber
Do you love helping people look and feel their best? We need trained stylists and barbers to put their talents into action by offering haircuts in our programs. Along with giving hair a fresh look, you will lift spirits and share smiles. We’re looking for people to visit for two hours on a regular basis at one of our shelter or housing programs. It’s a great way to offer direct assistance to participants working to build new futures.
Location: Programs in San Rafael, Corte Madera, Larkspur and Novato
Painting crew
Our Jonathan’s Place building in San Rafael is the county’s only year-round emergency shelter for adults facing homelessness. The shelter provides 38 beds for people transitioning toward housing with case management, meals and help to access benefits or community resources. We are looking for a team of adult volunteers to help paint the interior hallways. This project offers a tangible way to help provide a warm, dignified space while learning about our housing-focused services.
Location: 190 Mill St., San Rafael, 94901
Clean team
Being part of a Clean Team is a chance to provide direct assistance to families and staff. We’re looking for ad hoc teams of two to six people that can spend 2 to 4 hours cleaning, organizing and doing house laundry. Our staff provides needed supplies and brooms, mops or whatever you require to get the job done.
Location: 430 Mission Avenue, San Rafael
Donate Items
Along with hands-on volunteers, we appreciate people who contribute by bringing useful items for families and adults in our programs. Gift cards from Safeway, Target or other stores are much appreciated year-round. Volunteers who would like to learn about organizing a donation drive may contact our Community Engagement Coordinator, Andrea Rey.
Please see our wish list for our current needs.
